All-Important Barrier Draws Take Place Today

Date: 15/4/2008 -

The AAMI Golden Slipper and The BMW barrier draws will be conducted in separate functions in Martin Place today.

Officiated by the stewards of Racing NSW, the draw for the AAMI Golden Slipper – the world’s richest race for two-year-olds – will be open to the public in the Martin Place Amphitheatre.

Hosted by 2KY’s Terry Kennedy, owners and trainers of the final field will randomly select a miniature Golden Slipper trophy. On the underside will be a number indicating their horse’s starting barrier for Saturday’s $3.5m race.

Sydney Turf Club General Manager – Racing & Wagering, John Nicholson, said today’s barrier draw is sure to attract a lot of interest.

“With no dominant two-year-old in Australia at the moment, it’s a very open, classy field,” John stated.

“As usual, a good barrier for the AAMI Golden Slipper is going to play a very important part in the outcome of the race.”

In attendance will be some of the country’s leading trainers: Sydney’s Gai Waterhouse (Sebring, She’s Meaner), Melbourne-based David Hayes (Hips Don’t Lie, All American, Stripper, Reaan, Von Costa de Hero) and Adelaide’s Leon MacDonald (Augusta Proud).

The market, which has been regarded the most open for many years; will be adjusted by TAB Sportsbet immediately after the final horse has been allocated a starting barrier.

Similarly, connections of runners in the prestigious weight-for-age event, The BMW, will participate in a private barrier draw at 1.30pm at Moonshadow Grill, located in the lobby level of the MLC Centre.

The field for the $2.25m race, which has been previously ranked the highest rated race in Australia, was finalised this morning (see attachment for field).
