Sydney Turf Club Green Initiatives

With an international focus being placed on the issue of sustainability & climate change, there has been a shift in perception within the business community towards corporate social responsibility. We at Sydney Turf Club (STC), in aid of this important societal issue, have made the commitment to being the Australian racing industry leader in sustainability. With this commitment comes the conception of our very own sustainability dream……

Thousands of large-scale sporting events take place around the world every year, not least of which include our 65 race days at both Canterbury Park and Rosehill Gardens venues. But these events are not without environmental impact. Collectively they draw vast amounts of electricity from the power grid, consume fossil fuels and produce considerable amounts of waste. In 2009 STC decided to quantify the racecourse’s energy and resource use, develop a plan and set reduction targets for all future events.

We wanted to be responsible for hosting the world’s first “carbon neutral” race day. This was realised in “Green Day at the Gardens” hosted at Rosehill Gardens, on befittingly sweltering Sydney summers day, Saturday 31 January 2009. “Green Day at the Gardens” bought along with it the realisation that, though our achievements are vast, there is still so much we can do to improve our environmental impact.

STC’s “Eco Warriors” together with our CEO, Board of Directors & Staff, invite all our members & guests to embrace this vision & assist us in playing our part to “Make a Difference”.

WATER

A Water Saving Action Plan has, by installation of sub metering, enabled close analysis of where water is being consumed. This has resulted in recent improvements in facilities at Canterbury Park & a reduction in water use of 3000kl/month,

Coming soon: STC is looking into undertaking in partnership with Sydney Water a grey water (recycled treated sewerage) project to be utilised for landscaping, cooling towers and dams. This grey water will be taken off the network that currently runs nearby at Rosehill Gardens.

ENERGY

New Air-conditioning chilled water compressor installed 15/10/09, utilizing non ozone depleting refrigerant gas. This has resulted in not only decreased energy costs to produce chilled water, but is also in compliance with Kyoto Protocols.

We are currently in the process of conducting a lighting upgrade to energy efficient globes. By replacing all 120 watt incandescent light globes with 18 watt compact fluorescent globes, STC is on the way to decreasing its carbon footprint and environmental impact.

Coming soon: BAS Electrical is currently undertaking analysis at Rosehill Gardens for prospective installation of photo voltaic solar panels as a power source to be put back on the electricity grid enabling STC to produce some of its own power and reduce energy costs and environmental impact.

WASTE

The possible implementation of a Materials Handling Compound on its Rosehill Gardens is currently being researched. A proposed location is between the nursery and the garage at Unwin St gates & it is proposed this area will serve as a multipurpose waste management area housing all STC’s materials handling within one area. This will serve in improving waste processes with prospective long term cost savings for the business in cleaning staff, materials efficiencies and waste sorting processes.

CARBON NEUTRAL AUDIT PROCESS

Shift2Neutral tickShift2Neutral will provide an Environmental Audit in accordance with ISO 14001, which defines an environmental audit as the environmental standard against which organisations are assessed. It specifies the requirements an organisation to control the environmental impacts of its activities, products and services.

After the audit process, Sydney Turf Club will continue to develop environmentally friendly procedures and offset the carbon emissions on Green Day with the purchase of carbon credits.
